Annual Raffle

WVAPSS has in recent years provided financial assistance to students across West Virginia in soil conservation pursuits. This includes support for the WVU Soils Team and sponsorship of the WV Grassland Evaluation Contest. The prize in the 2009 annual fundraising raffle was a beautiful quilt made by Kathy Conway, mother of WVAPSS President Stephanie Connolly. The quilt depicts many of the state symbols of West Virginia, including the state flag, the state motto ("Montani Semper Liberi"), the state bird (northern cardinal), the state tree (sugar maple), the state flower (rhododendron), the state mammal (black bear), and the state insect (honey bee). Click on the image on the right to see a larger view of this beautiful, hand-crafted quilt.

Tickets were $2 each, or 3 for $5. The winning ticket was purchased by Theresa Birk of Elkins, WV. Congratulations, Theresa.

Tickets for the 2010 annual fundraising raffle will go on sale in October 2010.

Rules

  1. Only five hundred tickets will be sold. Each ticket has two numbers, randomly selected from 000 – 999.
  2. The winning number will be taken from the West Virginia Lottery’s Daily 3 drawn on December 31.
  3. The winner will be notified by telephone, and the gift can be picked up, or will be mailed to the winner.
  4. If the daily number does not match any sold ticket, the daily number on each successive day will be used until a winner is selected.
  5. All unsold tickets become the property of WVAPSS.

Outings and Excursions

Smithsonian Soils Exhibit (July 18-19, 2008)

WVAPSS and the West Virginia Chapter of the Soils and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) teamed up to sponsor a trip to the new soils exhibit, titled "Dig It! The Secrets of Soil," at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. In what had been an exciting year for both organizations, members of WVAPSS and SWCS were there for the opening of the much anticipated soils exhibit. Information about the exhibit may be found here. WVAPSS held their business meeting following the visit to the soil exhibit.
